  1. Travel insurance is a must

While traveling to Africa, you need to understand that it is an affordable place, and it wouldn’t hurt you if you invested in comprehensive travel insurance. Many travel insurance providers will guide you with the type of insurance you should be taking while traveling to Africa. Do not consider this to be an optional thing because it might have an impact on your health and finances during your travel.

Along with this, make sure that you try to learn a bit of their language in order to connect with the locals in the best possible manner. However, be at ease because English is actually the official language in many countries in Africa.

  1. Try the local food

Local food is a mix of matoke (cooked bananas), cassava, potatoes, sweet potatoes, beans, tomatoes, cabbage and a sauce made of ground peanuts.

  1. Dress correctly

Remember to dress respectfully. For women it’s best to bring an over the knee skirt because it’s impolite to wear trousers or shorts while visiting local communities. When on safari, however, you can wear shorts during day activities like hikes, safaris or boat tours.

Pack good hiking shoes for your chimpanzee or gorilla treks. Some parts can be very muddy and slippery. It’s also good to pack gaiters, gloves, a rain jacket/poncho and a hat. Although it’s hot, wear long trousers and thin long-sleeved shirts to protect your arms and legs from scratches.

Long clothing will also help protect you from diseases carried by mosquitoes and other insects such as tsetse flies. In general, you should bring a flashlight, day pack, insect repellent, malaria pills for some areas, waterproof bags and an international driving license if you’re thinking of driving yourself.

  1. Vaccinations

Immunizations are recommended for travel to countries in East/Central Africa. While not every country check immunization records, we strongly urge you to get all recommended vaccinations, bring your records regardless of whether or not they are required at the airport, and take any medication prescribed by your physician. Please note that many of the immunizations/medications will cover more than one country. Please click on the links below for an overview.
